Westin Smith

Westin Smith is a first generation scholar from southern California and a Ph.D. candidate in Spanish within the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Notre Dame. Before arriving at Notre Dame, Smith earned dual degrees in Spanish and English, with a minor in French, from Utah State University. Currently, he is investigating how modern Iberian cultural production questions and imagines what it means to be human. Through the figures of animals, nature, and death, Smith researches how humanity’s definition influences our relationship with the environment and each other.

Smith is a graduate fellow with the Nanovic Institute for European Studies and the Notre Dame Environmental Humanities Initiative.
