Join the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good for a masterclass led by Assistant Research Professor Mike Barnes, ND–IBM Technology Ethics Lab.

His masterclass is titled “Responsibility for Recommendations: The Morality of Online Speech Acts.”

When we speak online, who we're speaking to is largely determined by complex recommender systems. This is the case when you post a photo of your pet, as well as when violent extremists aim to incite horrific violence. In this masterclass, Barnes examine the power of these systems through the lens of speech act theory, asking what responsibilities should follow from the act of recommending.

The Masterclass Series showcases ECG Fellows and other associated research faculty and the “can’t miss” ideas that fuel their research. These events are open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Registration is not required, but it would help us better plan our reception if you let us know you're attending.
