Join the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good for a masterclass led by Wilsey Distinguished Graduate Fellow Rebecca Kates, Notre Dame Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Philosophy.
Her masterclass is titled “Everyone Knows What Emotions Are—Except for Philosophers.”
Several controversies in ethics and epistemology presuppose different accounts of emotions. Virtue theorists offer conflicting perspectives on how we ought to govern our emotions such as cultivating them or repressing them. Similarly, epistemologists grapple with whether emotions can be a reliable source of evidence for supporting our beliefs and the conditions under which they are justified. These longstanding debates touch every aspect of daily life, yet there is still a surprising amount of disagreement over what emotions tell us and how we should manage them. This masterclass explores competing philosophical accounts of emotion and the implications our beliefs about emotions might have in our daily decision-making.
The Masterclass Series showcases ECG Fellows and the “can’t miss” ideas that fuel their research. These events are open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Registration is not required, but it would help us better plan our reception if you let us know you're attending.
