Join the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good for a masterclass led by Wilsey Distinguished Graduate Fellow Matthew Mullin, Notre Dame Ph.D. candidate in the Department of English.
His masterclass is titled “Affirmative Estrangement: Disability and Identity in Early Modern England.”
In post-Reformation England, many factors contributed to an overwhelmingly negative attitude toward what we now call “disability”—yet, alongside and against these negative disability stereotypes, new forms of resistance and selfhood, which Mullin terms “affirmative estrangements,” also emerged in the period’s literature. This masterclass explores the new possibilities offered by these centuries-old texts for understanding disability’s relationship to social and personal identity both then and now.
The Masterclass Series showcases ECG Fellows and the “can’t miss” ideas that fuel their research. These events are open to the public, and refreshments will be served. Registration is not required, but it would help us better plan our reception if you let us know you're attending.
