The Good Life after the Age of Growth, with Prof. Daniel Markovits, Yale Law School

-

Location: 3130 Eck Hall of Law

Join us for a talk, The Good Life after the Age of Growth, with Prof. Daniel Markovits, Guido Calabresi Professor of Law, Yale Law School, on Friday, April 4.

The emergence of industrial capitalism created more wealth in two centuries than the rest of human history combined and is on track to end widespread poverty in the developing world. But growth is also damaging the planet, eroding our values & sowing social division.

Join Yale professor Daniel Markovits  and Notre Dame professors Meghan Sullivan (philosophy) and Mary Hirschfeld (theology, business) as they explore how we can organize life beyond growth and find meaning beyond the line going up on the graph. How has growth transformed humanity and how is it undermining us? What does a society look like without growth? Can we fill the moral void growth leaves behind?

Daniel Markovits is the Guido Calabresi Professor of Law at Yale Law School and Director of the Yale Law School Center for the Study of Private Law. He is the author of The Meritocracy Trap.

Mary Hirschfeld is the John T. Ryan Jr. Associate Professor of Theology and Business Ethics and author of Aquinas and the Market. She has Ph.D.s in Economics and Theology and works on the boundaries between theology and economics using an approach rooted in the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas.

Meghan Sullivan is the Wilsey Family College Professor of Philosophy and the Director of the Notre Dame Ethics Initiative. Sullivan's book (with Paul Blashko) The Good Life Method is based on her wildly popular introductory philosophy course at Notre Dame called “God and the Good Life.”

All are welcome and lunch will be provided.

Co-sponsored by the Notre Dame Law School Program on Private Law and the Notre Dame Research Program on Law and Market Behavior.
