Notre Dame–IBM Tech Ethics Lab Program Chairs
In partnership with the Notre Dame Ethics Initiative, the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good (ECG) is seeking up to three Notre Dame faculty members to serve as ND–IBM Tech Ethics Lab Program Chairs. Working within the context of the ND–IBM Technology Ethics Lab, these Program Chairs will receive substantial funding and administrative support to advance a major research program that explores an area of technology ethics.
The Chairs will be considered faculty affiliates of the Institute and have access to programs, events, and community at ECG and the ND-IBM Technology Ethics Lab. They will serve renewable three-year terms, starting July 1, 2025.
Program Chair Details
Eligibility
Program Chairs can come from any discipline but should be advanced research or tenure-stream faculty at Notre Dame with research programs that align with and enhance the ND-IBM Technology Ethics Lab.
Expectations
Program Chairs will be expected to:
- Teach at least one course per year with an emphasis on ethics;
- Design and carry out a high-level research program in technology ethics that advances the Lab and the Ethics Initiative;
- Participate in events and programs hosted by ECG, including presenting once per year in ECG’s weekly research seminar; and
- Participate in regular governing and planning meetings for ECG and the Ethics Initiative, including service on fellowship selection panels.
Chairs will be reviewed annually for their research and teaching contributions as well as program leadership, with the opportunity for reappointment at three-year intervals, with the agreement of their dean, department, and the Ethics Initiative Director.
Benefits
Program Chairs receive $100,000 per year to develop a research program in technology ethics, in addition to a one-ninth summer salary.
These funds will be allocated based on a proposal approved by Ethics Initiative leadership prior to the start of the appointment. Funds can be used to support predocs or postdocs, to lead conferences or academic meetings, to develop new curricula, to purchase data sets, or for other program development purposes. Program Chairs will also enjoy the support of ECG and Lab staff to assist with implementing their proposal.
