  1. Notre Dame hosts summit exploring role of faith, humanity in age of AI

    In the summit's keynote speech on Tuesday, Sept. 23, Meghan Sullivan, Wilsey Family College professor of philosophy and director of the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good and the Notre Dame Ethics Initiative, said DELTA is a faith-based framework for approaching AI.  Sullivan said AI is revolutionizing how people view ethics — in a way similar to how the atomic bomb presented hard ethical questions during World War II. But unlike the atomic age, she said, Christians haven't been involved in conversations about digitalization and the advent of AI.

    University leaders, business executives, academics, journalists and other prominent individuals have gathered on campus this week for the Notre Dame Summit on AI, Faith and Human Flourishing, hosted by the University’s Institute for Ethics and the Common Good and the Notre Dame Ethics Initiative.

    The summit plans to discuss the role ethics can play in society’s adaptation to the rise of generative AI, with a particular emphasis on Catholic virtue. From Monday through Thursday, attendees will reexamine the role of Catholic voices in navigating the ways generative AI is transforming human life through a series of lectures and discussion sessions.

    For the sake of developing workplace policy, Notre Dame hosts leaders like Google and YouTube to engage a new ethical framework called DELTA.

  5. Notre Dame summit aims to bring Christian values to AI revolution

    The university’s Institute for Ethics and the Common Good and its Ethics Initiative teamed up to host the Notre Dame Summit on AI, Faith and Human Flourishing on the Notre Dame campus from Sept. 22 to 25. Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the U.S., opened the summit with a Sept. 22 Mass at which he was the principal celebrant and homilist, with university president Father Robert Dowd, a Holy Cross priest, concelebrating.

    During her Sept. 23 keynote address, Meghan Sullivan — professor of philosophy and director of both the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good and the Notre Dame Ethics Initiative — said that “discernment is required … more than ever” with the acceleration of AI in an era of “technological triumphalism.”

  6. Notre Dame hosts summit on AI, faith, and human flourishing, launches DELTA framework

    Notre Dame University is bringing together ethicists, technologists, faith leaders, and policymakers this week to explore the ethical and spiritual implications of artificial intelligence at the Summit on AI, Faith and Human Flourishing. The event runs Monday, Sept. 22, through Thursday, Sept. 25, on the University’s campus.

    The summit, hosted by the Institute for Ethics and the Common Good and the Notre Dame Ethics Initiative, includes workshops, panels, and discussions with leaders from Google, Microsoft, Apple, and other organizations.

    A centerpiece of the summit is the launch of DELTA, a new framework for guiding conversations about AI. DELTA, which stands for Dignity, Embodiment, Love, Transcendence, and Agency, is designed to help people across sectors, from schools to workplaces, navigate the ethical and human implications of AI.

    Presented by the Insitute for Ethics and the Common Good and the Notre Dame Initiative, the Notre Dame Summit on AI, Faith and Human Flourishing runs Sept. 22-25 and "will draw together a dynamic, ecumenical group of educators, faith leaders, technologists, journalists, policymakers and young people who believe in the enduring relevance of Christian ethical thought in a world of powerful AI," according to the event's webpage.

  16. Notre Dame lands grant to create faith-based ethical framework for AI

    The University of Notre Dame has been awarded a $539,000 grant from Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. to help create a faith-based ethical framework for applications of artificial intelligence.

    The university aims to establish a network of scholars, technology industry experts and faith leaders to study the implications of the rapid rise of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and disseminate faith-based ethical frameworks in its use, Notre Dame said. The one-year project will include identifying key participants, holding focus groups to determine priorities, and laying the groundwork for next steps.
