Books in Ethics at Notre Dame symposium (BookENDs)

Book ENDs Conference Graphic

The Books in Ethics at Notre Dame symposium ("BookENDs" for short) is a biennial, invitation-only book manuscript workshop. It will be held at the University of Notre Dame every other fall, starting in 2027.

The goal is to provide authors seeking feedback on book manuscripts in normative ethics the opportunity to invite around eight leading scholars to convene with them at the University of Notre Dame to discuss their manuscripts.

BookENDs receives generous financial support from the University of Notre Dame’s Institute for Ethics and the Common Good and the university’s Ethics Initiative.

BookENDs will be held in tandem with ENDs, a biennial, thematic conference. The two will be held in alternating academic years. ENDs takes place in the spring, followed by BookENDs in the fall of the next academic year (but within the same calendar year).

Call for Proposals

We invite authors who have completed, or nearly completed, a book manuscript in normative ethics to submit a proposal for BookENDs 2027, which will be held at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, on October 22–23, 2027.

Proposals should include all the following: (a) the author’s CV, (b) a brief description of the book, its importance, and any plans for its publication (< 1,000 words), (c) a list of around fifteen potential invitees and suggestions for which chapters or sets of chapters they might suitably serve as lead discussant, and (d) the complete manuscript or at least two-thirds of it along with a brief summary of each remaining chapter and a proposal for completing them before September 2027.

Authors should keep in mind that over the two-day event, there will be around seven to eight sessions on specific chapters or sets of chapters and one wrap-up session for discussion of more holistic issues and any remaining issues from the previous sessions.

Save the proposal, including the CV, book description, suggestions for invitees, and manuscript chapters, as a single PDF with the book title as its name (e.g., “Book Title.pdf”) and attach it to an email sent to ends@nd.edu with the subject heading “Proposal for BookENDs 2027.” The deadline is noon (EST) on Sunday, March 29, 2027. Submissions will be evaluated by the organizers, and decisions will be finalized in mid-April, 2027.
